RAYMOND MATIBA

A journey of true self discovery. People often use this phrase very loosely, but spending six days and night in the African wilderness forces you to re-think who you are, and your relevance on this planet. My body and mind were pushed to well beyond the limits of my comfort zone, and often I said to myself that when I got back to my normal life I would never again take all the luxuries and creature comforts that I am privileged to have for granted; Something as simple as a mouth full of clean drinking water or a T-Shirt to protect my torso from the blazing sun.

This experience has changed the way I approach extreme challenges and  shown me the way that others around me become part of the solution in getting beyond those difficult situations. I have made a personal pledge to do at least one extreme challenge a year that will push my body and mind to the limit, to help me keep the focus on what is really important in surviving the urban and financial jungles that we live in today.

My week on the survivor experience was one of the most fascinating journeys I have ever been on.  It was truly life changing in so many ways.  I learnt more about myself  and my personal strengths and weaknesses in those 7 days than I ever did with anything else.

I grew to understand myself better in that I became more sensitive to my inner voice and my sixth sense.  I now understand the impatience of the “voice inside our heads”.  The term “six sense” is so commonly used and therefore loses its true meaning and importance in our daily lives.  I learnt that many of the questions I ask myself I already know the answers to, but it is only when you get this kind of opportunity, to explore  yourself that you fully appreciate the fullness of your own individual potential.

The Survival Course taught me to be more aware of how I / We fit into the overall scheme of nature.  How even in today’s modern times we are not apart but are still one with nature and that we have so much to learn from it.  I came to know myself as a team player, a supporter, a councilor and friend.  My life will always be richer for my amazing adventure as a survivor.
